Illinois Investors Share Thoughts on Wisconsin

by Brian Lee

Jeff Carter, a co-founder of Hyde Park Angels in Chicago, and Vanessa Rollings, managing director of Sandbox Industries, discussed the startup and investment scene in Wisconsin at the Wisconsin Innovation Network luncheon Tuesday at the Sheraton Hotel.

On funding:

Rollings: “Companies in the Midwest that get funded are good, solid companies. On the coasts, the companies that get funded have more sizzle.”

Carter: “Capital knows no borders.”

On Madison’s strengths:

Rollings: “There’s a lot of intellectual capital coming out of UW.”

Carter: “Madison has always been an entrepreneurial town, so the culture is right.”

On Madison’s weaknesses:

Rollings: “We want to make sure the ecosystem is there” where entrepreneurs can have the network they need for success.

Carter: “Density is a problem in Madison.”
