TASCET announced today that is has launched the Unique Patient Identifier (UPI), which removes the threat of synthetic identities within the healthcare industry.

“The UPI solves the most difficult challenge to patient safety: ensuring that patient records cannot be compromised due to mismatching, duplication, fraud or data breaches,” TASCET CEO Larry Aubol said in a statement.

According to a release, UPI is needed in the healthcare industry because the majority of patient records are electronically exchanged. The system helps to protect patient privacy so records can be stored and exchanged safely.

The UPI abides by the ASTM standards of being canonical, invariable, nondisclosing, verifiable, ubiquitous and only used to access health information, a release stated.
