The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) announced recently the winners of its annual Innovation Awards.
One winner, the team of Hiroshi Maeda, Soyoung Jung, Ray Collier, and Shawn and Heidi Kaeppler, developed soybeans that produce high levels of betalain, a natural red pigment. This sustainable coloring could replace synthetic food dyes.
The other, the team of Paige Henning, Benjamin Minkoff and Michael Sussman, developed an eco-friendly herbicide that offers targeted weed control.
“As WARF celebrates 100 years of partnership with UW-Madison, the Innovation Awards continue to highlight groundbreaking work happening across campus,” WARF CEO Erik Iverson said in a statement. “This year’s nominees exemplify the kind of forward-thinking research that has defined our legacy and will shape the next century of impact.”
Each team, selected from more than 350 submissions, received $10,000.
