Fab Lab Gets $300K for Clinical Devices

In an effort to spur medical device innovations, the BerbeeWalsh Foundation is making a five-year, $300,000 donation to the Morgridge Institute for Research’s Advanced Fabrication Laboratory or ‘Fab Lab’, the institute announced on Monday.

“We are looking in emergency medicine to be a little more proactive in thinking about product designs and the tools we need to do our jobs well,” BerbeeWalsh Foundation Co-Creator James Berbee, who also serves as a clinical assistant professor in the University of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine, said in a statement. “So we thought this would be a great bridge between Morgridge and the department, as an initial test bed for expanding the scope of the Fab Lab.”

According to a release, the early focus is on tapping experiences from doctor-patient interactions, starting with emergency medicine.

The Fab Lab is a campus-wide facility that works with innovators from start to finish on computer-aided design, prototyping, 3-D printing, and microfluidics and fabrication.
