Textile Makerspace Opens

Madison Sewing Studio, a makerspace for textile, apparel and handbag design, opened earlier this month at Sector67.

Founded by Maggie Welsh and Melissa Behrens after they won the Madison Soup event in November, Madison Sewing Studio will host its grand opening from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 24, complete with demonstrations, music and a raffle.

That will be followed by a kickoff “Swatch-a-Thon” starting at 10 a.m. Jan. 25. Participants will receive eight swatches to create a design, similar to Project Runway’s “Unconventional” challenge, according to the website.

In addition to events, the studio also offers classes, such as “Intro to Industrial Sewing Machines” and “Mending Old Clothes.” Memberships are $100/month ($50 for students) and include 24-hour facility access and a storage bin.

According to their online profiles, Welsh received an Associate Degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, while Behrens has a Master’s Degree from Marquette. Both also did their undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin.
